Every once in a while, when the stars align and the sun and moon are in the right posistion, good things occur. That is precisely what happened to resident SR Graphic Artist and Lowfive owner Dan aka Doughboy. After having a few conversations with the gang over at Fatlace and Slammed Society, it was decided to do a small feature on his whip! Pictures provided by…yours truly!

Doughboy has put extensive work in to his xB. Being a 2008 RS Edition didnt stop his need to alter almost every aspect of the already factory modified vehicle. After rendering quite a few concept drawings a la Chip Foose style (seriously lol) the final concept was decided upon and work began.

A mod that took some thought and fabrication were the 2011 Scion xB front and rear bumpers that were affixed to the 2008 body and the pre production Rado Edition Lip kit that was promptly molded to them, 2011 xB tailights and head lights were also added to complete the conversion. Easy Street airride with a digital controller was the suspension of choice and the xB now sits on MMR HR4 19*8 wheels with a +35 off set for that perfect flush stance.

Inside, no corners were cut. The digital air ride controller is molded into the sueded headliner. Painted pillars and 5 axis leather seats add an air of luxury to the xB. In the back a custom speaker box that shows off the paint matched air tank and holds the subs and amps takes up the entire trunk area. On each side of the speaker, a siganture angry doughboy is etched in to frosted plexiglass and lit up from behind.

Overall, this is one clean ass Scion and has already taken several best of show and best of class trophies home.

Check out the pics over at Slammed Society!

Welcome to what is going to be a future periodical on Formula One. We’re going to be focusing on this sport because it is unique amongst all other forms of motorsport. Instead of typical regulations which determine exactly what you must have, Formula One (F1) is a sport based on the absence of. While there are few uniform rules such as: number of cylinders, rev limit, number of wheels and more recently acceptable aero work, what you will find is rules that are open to interpretation as illustrated by last years ‘double diffuser’ row. To give you the best mental image, consider the typical shape of a two door sports car. You have now defined that area, while F1 regulations focus on the negative area around the car.

So what does this mean? Teams which create one of a kind machines from exotic materials and pioneering manufacturing technics. Amazing machines, so different yet so close which only amplifies the significance of time. Winning is winning, be it a quarter mile at a time or 1/1000th of a second as measured in F1.

Let’s move on then, what are we expecting exactly in this coming 2011 season of F1? There are three notable main factors – New adjustable rear wing, Pirrelli is the new tire manufacturer and Kinetic Energy Recovery systems (KER’s) are back from 2009.

The F1 Teams Association (FOTA) was created to produce agreements outside F1’s governing body, Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), for a gentlemen’s agreement to better sport. The FOTA is made up of all teams: Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Force India, Lotus, Renault, RedBull, Toro Rosso, Sauber, Virgin, Mercedes and HRT*. The emphasis amongst the teams over the past decade has been agreements with a focus on over-taking maneuvers. As seen in the past F1 cars are capable of speeds in excess of 200+ mph on straights, speeds typically not found on circuit or street courses. At this level of competition the margins become simply too small at these extremes. In 2010 we saw the introduction of adjustable front wings; logically the next step is an adjustable rear wing. The idea proposes that being able to adjust the wing to a slimmer profile when coming to a straight will provide less drag and ultimately a higher top speed. Though we have one major issue here, everyone has it.

With the exit of Bridgestone at the end of 2010 all teams will have new compounds to figure out from Pirrelli. Pirrelli was last seen in the sport back in 1991, though has history back to the 1950’s. Understanding how the rubber works on the ground is possibly the largest key element to a fast car. A car that aerodynamically is fast in a straight line may not be fast through a turn as it has not created sufficient heat in the tires. Conversely, a car that adds too much down force may have better traction in corners but at the price of worn out tires and a lower top speed. You are probably saying to yourself, ‘that may be true, but not every course has the same number of turns and straights’ and you would be correct. This is a season long balancing act by the teams with many more factors such as surface abrasiveness, weather and an ‘option’ or softer compound tire at every race in which all teams are required to at least one compound change. Still, bottom line is that if you cannot get the car to work well and find a balance, it doesn’t matter how many tricks you have as someone will be faster.

First introduced in 2009, the KERs systems allow teams the ability to use stored energy under braking for reapplication to the tune of 80~ horsepower through an electric motor for a given boost of power lasting 6.7 seconds total per lap. The intent was for F1 teams to showcase their engineering ability through new technology and create over-taking maneuvers. In last year’s 2010 season the FOTA decided to halt the use of KERs for development and safety reasons. The teams held to the gentlemen’s agreement though for 2011 all teams are ready to have the option back on the table. Two systems have been developed for storing the charge – battery and flywheel. The first is obvious, when a charge is built it is stored chemically in a battery as we all know, the other is WilliamsF1’s unique flywheel design recently used by the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Only the teams with the biggest pocket book will have these available at first or at all through the season. The other notable issue is that any driver using KERs to try and pass a KERs equipped car in front will still have to contend with the fact they as well can use their KERs boost. Once again we see a good offensive strategy being deployed as a defensive move. Not all things are good about KERs, it is complicated and reliability is not guaranteed, shifts the weight balance and finally adds a weight penalty compared to any non-KERs equipped car.

This season will shape up to be one of the most exciting ever, not only do we have 5 World Champions starting on the grid, drivers will be tasked to handle a Nintendo controller of variables while pulling 5 G’s in a turn. Gone are the days of traction control and other driver aid systems, so some might argue that we have removed the pure driver factor but I’d rather say we are enhancing it. With the future, new technologies and ways of going faster are inevitable such as McLaren’s MP4-26’s odd U-shaped sidepods or Renaults R31 front mounted exhaust system, change is going to happen so we must embrace it. The fastest driver and more than ever the most innovative team will put their stamp on the 2011 season and I’m proud to see F1 taking on such future technologies. Now, if only we could get them to bring back refueling and add one more unknown variable, it would truly shape up to be chaotic.
